I have read often that we should make slow, permanent changes in our eating and exercise habits so that they become your new lifestyle rather than adopting a temporary fix. This is not something I have ever found to work for me. Those slow little changes just do not stick because there is nothing motivating to continue them long enough for them to become the new habit. A couple of tiny tweaks to your eating and exercise are not going to create any results. Then maybe you add one more little tweak to ingrain into your “new lifestyle,” but still do not see any significant result. Eventually you become bored with it all. Nothing is propelling you forward. No, you don’t necessarily need instant gratification, but you do need to see or feel some change in order to want to continue. Changing your lifestyle is no easy feat. You are where you are because it is comfortable for you right now, perhaps with the exception of your body size/weight. Extra pounds are a concern for you. But what you are doing that is creating your current state is so darn ingrained, you’d really like to stay in that pattern. It’s easy – it’s a no brainer.
So you are wondering, if you are not going to make small little easy changes, how are you going to ever change? Because change – complete transformation – happens in an instant. Bam – you are ignited! Look back over your life at the times you made a change; a change in anything. There may have been some time leading up to the change where you thought about it and even researched what/how you wanted to make the change. There could have been events leading up to it. But once you made the decision, you were transformed. Slow changes are not going to motivate you. The decision to just BE the change will set you on fire! Because you shift your mind all at once and start being exactly what you intend all at once, you will start to see immediate results. These results will provide evidence to your brain that this is exactly what you want to be doing. It will reinforce your new beliefs. With each bit of new result, your new beliefs about who you are will become stronger and propel you forward.
That is how lasting change happens – I blogged about this previously. Quantum decision. There is nothing slow and working up to your goal about it. You flat out decide and become. It feels amazingly easy once the decision is made. So let’s do this.
