How do you find support in groups? There is definitely power in numbers, but where do you find that kind of interaction and mutual support? Quite a while back, I was investigating just this thing on social media. There seems to be a group for just about anything on Facebook, right? As expected, when I searched out weight loss, there were quite a few groups that came up in the list. So I zipped around through a bunch of them and clicked “join.” I was so excited at the thought I could connect with others and even see what others were struggling with and what they were looking for answers on. Within 24 hours, I had notifications back that I had been “added to the group.” Whoo hoo. Right? Right? Bueller?
Okay. Not Whoo hoo. Not even a whoo. All the groups without exception had THOUSANDS of members, but not a conversation to be found. Seriously. What I found were self promotions for shakes of just about every description – but all promising FAST, easy weight loss. Pills that were guaranteed to make you lose weight – yup, FAST and easy. Buy my work out videos online – Start making great money as a distributor of this power bar/shake/pill. Pictures of bikini’s walking out of the surf abound. It was so disappointing. No, not just disappointing – hideous! I wondered why even the advertisers would waste their time advertising in a group of thousands of other advertisers.
After stewing in my disappointment for awhile, my inner coach kicked in. The curse of being a life coach – you sure don’t get to wallow in anything for long before your coach brain starts asking coach questions. Questions like, “So Jo, what is perfect about this? “Shut up coach brain, can’t you see there is nothing perfect? The entire investigation into Facebook support is a bust!” But this is a great question because it keeps nagging and incubating in the back of your mind until you do see what is perfect in a disappointing situation. When I came up for air, I knew what was perfect. I could create a group where my readers could not only interact and ask questions, they would have the common bond of having read my blogs and style of coaching or having listened to my podcasts on weight loss coaching. It would give me the opportunity to interact, live, and answer questions. I loved that idea!
Take Me To The Weight Loss Mindset!
So The Weight Loss Mindset was born. This is the name of my in-person seminar series, so I had set up a closed group for it. Like any awesome idea and name, it was immediately stolen by someone else. No matter. I can post a link here that will take you to the right group. It had been waiting in the background with just the two founding members because I plan on coaching in weekly groups online (more about that later!). But I realized that I needed to get it out there and let you all jump on in. I would love to get this group active. There is NO posting of ads within the group allowed. Anyone posting a promotion will be removed from the group. It is for safe, private interaction (this is why it is a closed group). Anything you post is only visible within the group. It does not post on your timeline or in your friends’ news feeds. It will only show up for you and other members of The Weight Loss Mindset. So I am formally inviting you all to join in, introduce yourself and post away! The more you participate, the more interaction and meaningful conversation we can create.
